People always ask me when the best time to take their probiotic is and I always say the best time is when you’ll remember to take it each day because consistency is key. And while I’d always heard that probiotics are best taken on an empty stomach in the morning, I changed my mind about ten years ago when I was at a Metagenics conference led by a chiropractor who said he suggests that his patients take them at night to aid in the body’s restoration. That made sense to me, so that’s when I prefer to take them (before bed on an empty stomach) and that inclination feels validated after listening to gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz on the Rich Roll podcast yesterday. He was explaining the importance of having a circadian rhythm in accordance with your eating routine, which is my biggest issue: eating way after the sun goes down. He states that the microbiome (our gut bacteria) is, in fact, nocturnal and designed to help the body restore while we sleep, so it is in our best interest to finish digesting by bedtime. So if you can remember to take your supplements each night when you’re crashing out, that is the optimal time to send some bacteria buddies down the hatch!
